BJ 2024

Welcome to the web site of the 1st International Conference on Bio-joining that will take place in Porto, Portugal, 5-6 December 2024. The conference venue is the campus of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), which offers excellent facilities for high quality scientific interactions. FEUP is located in the town of Porto in the Northern region of Portugal. Porto is a beautiful and lively city, steeped in history and rich in great experiences. With its magnificent location by the Atlantic coast, Porto is the city of the world famous Port Wine and the River Douro.

This conference is held every 2 years. The conference is chaired by Lucas F. M. da Silva and co-chaired by Stanislav Gorb, Teresa Pinho and Luísa Carvalho. The focus is on joining techniques (adhesives, mechanical joints and welding) applied to biological environments, in medical, dentistry and veterinary applications.

Submissions are welcomed on the following topics:

Natural adhesives
Biological adhesives
Biomimetic adhesives
Fibrillar adhesives
Bioadhesion
Bioinspired interfaces and surfaces
Joining of natural materials
Adhesion and adhesives in dentistry
Adhesion and adhesives in medicine
Adhesion and adhesives in veterinary
Biologically inspired joints
Mechanical joints in biological applications
Welding in biological applications

Confirmed plenary lectures:

Prof. João Mano (University of Aveiro)
Bioinspired soft adhesives in biomedical applications

Prof. Longjian Xue (Wuhan University)
Bioinspired structured adhesives for various surfaces

Prof Milan Šernek (University of Ljubljana, Slovenia)
Bio-based adhesives from wood sources - liquefied wood, lignin and tannin

Prof Brian Love (The University of Michigan, USA)
Rationalizing surface preparations, complexity and eventual outcomes tied to adhesion in dental materials
