Welcome to the web site of the 4th International Conference on Machine Design and Automation Intelligence - MDAI2027. The 4th International Conference on Machine Design and Automation Intelligence will take place at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) on the 2nd and 3rd of September 2027.
This conference will be chaired by Lucas F. M. da Silva (University of Porto, Portugal) and Mehdi Kasaei (INEGI, Portugal). Machine design involves the conception, design and development of machines. It requires the knowledge of basic sciences and multiple engineering topics, such as physics, mathematics, mechanical drawing, mechanics, machine theory, materials, metallurgy, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, manufacturing processes, computation, sensors, actuators, mechatronics, automation and control. As the industry evolves and becomes more demanding, it is worth focusing on the new directions and the most promising achievements in machine design, able to develop machines that meet the industry requirements.
The conference is an opportunity for researchers and scientists in the area of machine design to present their most recent results, to discuss together new solutions, and to establish new contacts and find out common interests for further cooperation. The conference will focus on original and new research results on machine design. Contributions addressing novel theoretical issues, as well as specific applications, are welcome.
Among the topics covered are: Design theory and methodology, design of machine elements, design of mechanisms, design optimization, design management, CAD/CAM/CAE technology for design, sustainability and renewable energy in design, reliability of mechanical systems in design, expert systems in design, theoretical and experimental analyses in design engineering, kinematics and dynamics of mechanisms and machines, nonlinear phenomena in mechanisms, machines and mechanical systems, rapid prototyping, modelling and simulation, experimental testing techniques, intelligent sensors, micro electro - mechanical systems (MEMS), electric, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, automation, robotic systems, CNC machines, mechatronics, micromachines, automatic and intelligent control systems, machine learning algorithms, human-machine interfaces, haptic systems, digital twins, and internet of things.

What we have learned from fatigue of AM materials: from fundamental mechanisms to component assessment
Prof Stefano Beretta
(Politecnico di Milano, Italy)
Prof. Stefano Beretta got his PhD at Kyushu University in 1997 and since then he has been making his career at the Politecnico di Milano. From 2024 he has been appointed Visiting Professor at Auburn University, National Center for Additive Manufacturing Excellence (NCAME). S. Beretta has a long record of services for ESIS (European Structural Integrity Society). His main research interests are fatigue and damage tolerance assessment of railway components together with planning of maintenance and inspections. In the last years the research was devoted to structural integrity assessment of AM components in the aerospace field, a research area where S. Beretta and his group developed a new software benchmarked by the European Space Agency on Al and Ti64 components. In 2019 he was conferred the ASTM Award of Excellence in Additive Manufacturing Research.
Hybrid polymer–metal gears: From concept to experimental validation
Dr Carlos Fernandes

Carlos Fernandes received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 2015 from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), Portugal. He has been a researcher at INEGI since 2010 and has been Director of the Tribology, Vibrations and Industrial Maintenance Research Unit (CETRIB) since February 2022. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at FEUP and an Associate Editor of the journal Mechanism and Machine Theory. His research focuses on tribology, machine elements, gear transmissions, elastohydrodynamic lubrication, and hybrid polymer–metal gears. He has published in international journals, and his work combines modelling, experimental characterisation, and industrial collaboration.
Design of robotic systems: From kinematic foundations to integrated motion intelligence
Dr Stefan Bezrucav
(RWTH Aachen University, Germany)
Dr.-Ing. Stefan-Octavian Bezrucav is Managing Chief Engineer at the Institute of Mechanism Theory, Machine Dynamics and Robotics (IGMR) at RWTH Aachen University, where he is building a postdoctoral research group on Integrated Motion and Manipulation Intelligence for robotic systems in unstructured environments and sustainability applications. He co-develops the institute's research strategy, leads grant applications and consortium management, and oversees its project portfolio. He earned his doctorate at RWTH Aachen with a framework for task planning and execution for mobile manipulators. Before returning to academia, he led the Preprocessing department at battery-recycling company cylib, bridging his research interests in robotics, mobile manipulation, and the circular economy.
